How You Can Help

Can you spare just an hour a week to help make a child’s wish come true? We are looking for friendly people to carry out one of our most important and enjoyable volunteering roles . You will connect with wish children and their families via video call, to listen and capture their wish ideas. This important first step, called a ‘wish discovery,’ is where you will meet a child and understand what they truly wish for.

This role is flexible and is carried out remotely, which means you will meet children and volunteers across the UK without having to leave your home. Together, you can bring hope, joy, and magic to children who need it most no matter where you live in the UK.

What You Will Be Doing as a Wish Maker

Before you begin, you will have a friendly introductory chat with one of our team and receive inspiring online training which is designed to fit around your busy life. Once we have carried out your DBS check you're ready to go. Here’s what the role involves:

• Use our Volunteer App to choose a family ready to share their wish.
• Contact the family to arrange an online “wish discovery” video call at a time to suit you both.
• Carry out your first wish discovery call (on Teams) with an experienced volunteer.
• Explore the child’s ideas and discover the things they love, finding out why they are so important to them.
• After the call, create a personalised wish story that captures the child’s personality, imagination and ideas.
• Send the wish story to our Wishgranting team, who will work to make the wish a reality for that child and their family.

What makes a great Wish Maker?

• Commitment to our values: be inspiring, be magical, be inclusive.
• You will be a great communicator with both children (some of whom have complex medical and additional needs) and adults.
• You will be a natural organiser and able to keep on top of tasks.
• You will have a friendly, enthusiastic, and compassionate approach.
• You will need basic IT skills and access to a computer or laptop.
• Willingness to engage with our ongoing training and development programme.
• A minimum commitment of one year, conducting at least one wish discovery per month and hopefully more!
• Participation in our quarterly online volunteer meetings and engagement with our wider volunteer community where possible.
