Wish Maker Interpreter (Bengali/Bangla)

Opportunity image

More than 60,000 children in the UK have been diagnosed with a critical condition, changing their lives and the lives of their families forever. For them, the joy of childhood is brought to an abrupt end, with treatment, hospital appointments and sleepless nights taking over. The power of a wish revives a childhood stolen by critical illness. It brings light and joy to children and their loved ones and leaves a profound and lasting impact on all their lives. But we can’t be that light for everyone. Together, we have the power to #LightUpTheDarkness.

What will I be doing?

As an Bengali/Bangla Interpreter, you will help with the initial contact with wish families that don’t use English as a first language. You will make the first call to the parent/guardian of a wish child when a referral comes in, to explain what we do here at Make-A-Wish UK and with the support of a Wish Referral Officer, help complete the application for a wish. You may also be required to interpret during the Wish Discovery and the delivery of the wish.

How will I be supported?

You will be supported by our Wish Referral Team and Volunteer Team. There will also be opportunities to share best practice and receive support from your peers.

We will ensure you have the training and tools required to deliver your role and will regularly be seeking your feedback to ensure that we can deliver the support you need. You will also have opportunities to receive updates and share your feedback through our Volunteer Voices programme.

How much time will I need to commit?

The amount of time commitment will depend on when a wish requires Bengali/Bangla interpretation. When a wish requires interpretation, we anticipate around 15-30 minutes for the initial call and then if needed, another 30-minute call to go through the application form with a Wish Referral Officer. If interpretation is required further for the Wish Discovery and Wish Delivery phases, this will be done on an ad-hoc basis over a period of 6-9 months as the wish is planned and delivered.

Where will I be based?

You will be able to deliver this role from home.
